Understanding the Two Materials
Aluminum
Aluminum is a metal alloy prized for its combination of high strength, low weight relative to steel, and natural resistance to corrosion. In window and door systems, aluminum profiles are extruded into precise shapes that form the frame and sash components.
Thermal break technology: Raw aluminum conducts heat readily, which would make an untreated aluminum frame a thermal bridge — allowing warmth to escape in winter and enter in summer. Modern thermally broken aluminum profiles solve this by inserting a polyamide (nylon) strip between the inner and outer aluminum sections. This polyamide barrier interrupts the conductive path, significantly reducing heat transfer through the frame.
Structural performance: Aluminum's inherent rigidity means profiles can be slimmer while still supporting large glass panes. This translates directly into thinner sight lines — the visible frame edges — maximizing the glass area within any given opening. For architects designing large glazed facades or contemporary interiors that emphasize light and views, this is a meaningful aesthetic advantage.
Finish range: Aluminum accepts a wide variety of surface treatments. Powder coating — applied electrostatically and then cured under heat — provides a durable, uniform finish available across the full RAL color range and numerous specialty colors. Anodizing creates a harder, more mineral-like surface that is integral to the aluminum itself. Wood-effect finishes using laminate film or sublimation printing allow aluminum frames to replicate the warm appearance of timber without its maintenance requirements. Sustainability: Aluminum is highly recyclable. At the end of a building's life, aluminum profiles can be reclaimed and reprocessed with significantly less energy than primary production requires. uPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride)
uPVC — also referred to simply as PVC-U or vinyl in some markets — is a rigid thermoplastic polymer used extensively in window and door systems since the 1960s. Unlike plasticized PVC (used in flexible products such as pipes or flooring), uPVC does not contain plasticizers, giving it dimensional stability and resistance to degradation.
Inherent thermal insulation: Unlike metals, uPVC is a poor conductor of heat. The polymer material itself provides insulation without the need for an inserted thermal break. Modern uPVC profiles are also designed with multi-chamber internal geometries — hollow sections within the profile — that trap still air, further reducing thermal conductivity. This inherent insulation is one of the principal performance advantages of uPVC.
Profile depth: Because uPVC is less structurally rigid than aluminum, profiles are typically deeper to achieve the required strength — commonly 82mm or more in high-performance systems. The wider visible frame is a natural consequence of this. This can be a design consideration in applications where minimizing visible frame is a priority, but in many residential settings it is an accepted and familiar aesthetic.
Structural reinforcement: Where uPVC profiles need to span wider openings or support heavier glass, galvanized steel or aluminum reinforcing sections are inserted into the profile chambers. This maintains structural integrity while keeping the external appearance consistent. The profile handles weather exposure; the reinforcement handles structural loads.
Finish options: Standard uPVC is manufactured in white, which does not require painting and retains its appearance over many years when cleaned appropriately. Woodgrain laminate finishes — applied as a factory-bonded film — allow uPVC windows to replicate oak, mahogany, and other timber appearances, inside and outside. Solid-color laminate options expand the range further. Unlike painted surfaces, laminate finishes do not peel or require repainting.
Maintenance: uPVC frames require no repainting, staining, or surface treatment over their service life. Periodic cleaning with mild soap and water and an annual check of hardware is the typical maintenance requirement. This low maintenance profile is a significant practical advantage, particularly in residential contexts.
Lifespan: Quality uPVC systems typically have a service life in the range of 25–35 years before profile degradation (yellowing, surface brittleness) may become apparent. Hardware and seals are typically renewed before this point. Advances in uPVC chemistry and UV stabilizer additives have extended service life considerably compared to early-generation products.

The slightly wider profile of an uPVC system is generally a non-issue in standard residential openings, where the frame proportions read as normal and expected. Which System Is Right for You?
There is no universally correct answer — both aluminum and uPVC are proven, high-quality systems when correctly specified and installed. The following considerations can help guide the decision:
Consider Aluminum (S67) when:
- The project has a contemporary or modern architectural character where slim sightlines matter
- Large openings are required that exceed the practical spans of uPVC without excessive reinforcement
- A specific custom color — particularly a dark, metallic, or unusual color — is required
- The project is commercial, mixed-use, or high-specification residential where long service life and material durability are prioritized

Consider uPVC (SOFTLINE 82) when:

The S67 is a thermally broken aluminum casement and door system from Alumil's SMARTIA range. It offers a 67mm frame depth, supports glazing units up to 58mm, and is available in the full RAL powder coat range plus anodized and wood-effect finishes. The S67 covers casement windows, tilt-and-turn, tilt-only, inward and outward opening doors, pivot, and fixed light configurations. VEKA SOFTLINE 82 — uPVC System
The SOFTLINE 82 is a high-performance uPVC window and door system with an 82mm multi-chamber profile. It accommodates glazing units up to 52mm and is available in white, woodgrain laminates, and solid-color options. The SOFTLINE 82 covers casement and tilt-and-turn windows, inward and outward opening doors, sliding configurations, and folding-sliding systems.
